Gondomar is located in the District of Porto, to the east of the city, where the Douro river valley meets landscapes of schist and scrubland. The Municipality stretches across Parishes such as Rio Tinto, Fânzeres, São Pedro da Cova and Melres, spanning dense urban areas and rural pockets that preserve an older pace of life. Its proximity to Porto shaped its growth throughout the twentieth century, yet never erased the identity of its riverside communities nor the memory of the ancient activities tied to the river and the land.
