about the place

Matriz is the central parish of the city of Horta, on the island of Faial (Azores), covering 1.62 km² and home to 2,435 inhabitants (2021 census). It was here that Joss de Utra, captain of the donatary of Faial, settled, and the settlement was raised to the status of town and seat of the municipality in 1498. The Igreja Matriz do Santíssimo Salvador (parish church) opened in 1514 and was ransacked by English corsairs in 1589 and 1597.
