Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Most Blessed Sacrament

Gaula, Santa Cruz, Madeira
25 – 27 September 2026

history

In the Parish of Assomada, in the freguesia of Gaula, concelho of Santa Cruz, the Feast of Nossa Senhora das Dores e do Santíssimo Sacramento is celebrated, bringing together in a single occasion the devotion to the Virgin of Sorrows and the veneration of the Holy Eucharist. The feast combines religious moments with community gatherings, at a time when the parish unites around its faith and traditions. Nossa Senhora das Dores is venerated in memory of Mary's suffering, a devotion deeply linked to the Passion of Christ. Her feast follows the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, underlining the bond between the sorrow of the Mother and the sacrifice of the Son. It is this connection that gives meaning to the celebration lived in Gaula, where the community remembers and honours this mystery.

about the place

Nestled on the sunny slopes of the municipality of Santa Cruz, on the island of Madeira, Gaula is a place that reveals itself slowly, between sun-drenched hillsides and fields that speak of hard work and faith. Curiously, its name is linked to the famous legend of Amadis de Gaula, lending it a rare literary fragrance, of ladies and knights from ages past. Here, the Parish of Assomada holds a religious soul that can be felt along its pathways, among churches, chapels and manor houses such as São João Latrão. Folklore holds a place of honour, with cane coming to life in the hands of dancers, and fine Madeiran cuisine served in roasts and stews made with age-old wisdom. To visit Gaula is to accept an invitation to slow down and be carried along by the rhythm of a land that has known how to preserve what truly matters.
