about the place
Santa Maria da Feira spreads across the heart of Entre-Douro-e-Vouga, in the District of Aveiro, across a landscape of gentle hills and ancient estates. The place name 'Feira' has been documented since the early twelfth century, linked to the Terra de Santa Maria and its Castle. In 1407, D. João I granted the town the privilege of holding a fortnightly fair, consolidating its regional centrality. Each year, on 20 January, the Festa das Fogaceiras renews a centuries-old devotion to São Sebastião that has passed through generations.
