Pombal is located in the District of Leiria, in a transition zone between the coastal plains and the inland hills of Estremadura. The territory extends across several parishes, from Louriçal to Carriço, from Abiul to Redinha, crossed by the river Arunca and flanked by vast pine forests that shape the landscape. The Municipality became forever associated with the Marquês de Pombal, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, who had his seigneurial origins here and who shaped Portugal in the eighteenth century.
