Penafiel lies in the northeast of the District of Porto, nestled between the rivers Sousa and Tâmega, in a landscape of hills covered with vineyards and oak woodland. A municipality seat with a long agricultural and religious tradition, its network of parishes — from Paço de Sousa to Abragão, from Boelhe to Valpedre — preserves a deeply rooted rural identity. The Mosteiro de Paço de Sousa, founded in the 10th century, is one of the oldest Romanesque monuments in the country and houses the tomb of Egas Moniz, the guardian of D. Afonso Henriques.
