Évora is the district capital of Alentejo Central. The municipality covers 1,307.08 km² and has 53,591 inhabitants (2021 census), spread across twelve parishes; the city itself has 40,455 inhabitants. The historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.
