Espinho lies on the Atlantic coast of the District of Aveiro, south of Porto, on a strip of land between the ocean and the ria. Its modern history begins in the 18th century, and the Municipality was officially created in 1899, quickly establishing itself as a seaside resort and fishing port. The proximity of the sea shaped the identity of the place, where fishing and beach tourism defined generations of people from Espinho.
